The University of the Third Age was founded in Toulouse France in 1972 and is now developed into world wide movement. The Australian U3A is based on the model adopted by the UK U3A in the early 80s. All of the teaching, planning and administration of a U3A is carried out by its own members thus tapping the skills and experience of older people.
In 1984 the first Australian U3A groups were formed in Melbourne. They quickly spread throughout Victoria and within five years to every State & Territory, developing as a voluntary self help organisation.
However many Universities, TAFE institutions, Schools, community education groups and local councils have supported U3A by making class rooms, offices and other resources available.
