U3A Baw Baw’s 2021 Literary Lunch
8 October 2021
Our Guest Speaker this year will be Emeritus Professor Peter McPhee AM
Professor Peter McPhee is an internationally recognised historian from the University of Melbourne. Peter has published a wide range of books and scholarly works on French history. He is a regular reviewer of books and frequently is a public speaker on historical interpretation of Art. He is Chair of the History Council of Victoria, the State’s peak body for history. Peter’s topic is:
“Reading in a time of pandemic
We have all had our own ways of dealing with the Covid19 pandemic that has engulfed the world since early 2020. For many of us, forced lockdowns have given us more time to read. But what books have we wanted to read? You might think about what you chose. For me, while the direct experience of the pandemic has been directly experienced only through social isolation, indirectly it has been felt as a deep ultimatum from the earth about the interactions of its inhabitants. Books have been both a consolation and a provocation for me over these months. In this reflection, I will outline what I have felt impelled to read and why, ending with my re-encounters with Gippsland’s great writer and historian Don Watson.”
The Literary Lunch this year will be held at the Royal Hotel, 2/4 Main South Road, Drouin commencing at 12.30. on Friday, 8 October for lunch at bar prices.
